After more than 20 years of construction, the urban and rural planning discipline has developed into a comprehensive discipline based on Liaoning and facing the whole country, which characterized by urban and rural ecological planning, cold urban safety technology, and cold urban and rural space design, multi-disciplinary cross-penetration and coordinated development. Many high-quality professionals at all levels have been trained, they have made positive contributions to the national urban and rural construction and economic development of Liaoning. It has positively contributed to the national urban and rural construction cause and the economic development of Liaoning. It has formed four main subject directions: 1. regional development and ecological planning; 2. urban and rural community living environment planning; 3. cold urban design and urban renewal; 4. urban and rural planning theory and methods.

The platform of discipline development is based on the provincial key laboratories such as the Urban and Rural Planning Information Technology and Ecological Early Warning Laboratory, the Key Laboratory of Architectural Eco-physics Technology and Evaluation of Liaoning Province, the Urban Regional Ecological Construction and Control Engineering Research Center of Liaoning Province, the Key Laboratory of Geotechnical and Road Engineering of Liaoning Province, and the Municipal and Environmental Engineering Experimental Research Center of Liaoning Province. Relying on the stable team of scientific research institutions such as Urban Planning and Design Institute, Tianzuo Architecture Science Research Institute, Northeast Waterfront City Research Institute, Urbanization and Village Construction Research Institute, Ecological Planning and Green Building Research Institute, Building Environment and Energy Conservation Research Institute, and Architectural Research Institute, the joint training mode of undergraduate, master, and doctor has been established.

The major project of urban planning and design for the Liaodong Bay New Area, a national strategy of Liaoning coastal economic belt, is taken as the guide to promote teaching and scientific research development. Through the ten-year planning and construction of Liaodong Bay, it has built a livable, low-carbon, and ecological coastal port city, summarized the experience of urban design guiding planning practice, explored new ways of urban planning development and discipline construction, and made significant contributions to the implementation of the development strategy of Liaoning coastal economic belt. In the past five years, it has completed six national projects and won 34 federal, provincial, and ministerial science and technology awards, including the National Excellent Engineering Survey and Design Award (First Prize) for the planning and design of the Liaodong Bay Campus of the Dalian University of Technology; the National Excellent Urban and Rural Planning and Design Award (Praise Award) for the detailed construction planning of Liaodong Bay Sports Center; and the Science and Technology Progress Award (First Prize) for the research on the softening connection mode between the new industrial area and the town in the new urbanization by China Society of Architecture; Liaodong Bay City Culture Exhibition Hall won the WA City Contribution Award (Finalist Award). Through the special reports and academic discussions of ' People's Daily internal reference,' ' China Construction News,' ' Architectural Journal,' ' Planner,' etc., and the holding of ' Planning Practice under the Guidance of Urban Design-Liaodong Bay Decade Forum,' the influence of urban and rural planning discipline in Shenyang Jianzhu University has expanded in the whole country.
